Malayalam film Aami and director Kamal under attack petitioner seek ban High Court Love Jihad

The situation of another film seems to have followed suit after the Padmaavat controversy - and is currently under attack for alleged distortion of facts, supporting malicious social elements, and degrading popular sentiments in the name of cinematic liberty.

Aami, director Kamal's upcoming Malayalam film starring Manju Warrier, is a biopic on Kamala Suraiyya, also known as Madhavikutty and Kamala Das, a renowned English poetess and Malayalam author.

A lawyer named KP Ramachandran has filed a petition in the Kerala High Court seeking a ban on the film by way of a directive to the CBFC, restraining it from censoring the film. He claims that Aami intends to support and justify 'Love Jihad', and twisting real-life incidents in the subject's life.

According to reports, he also blames director Kamal for using his position as the president of Kerala State Chalachithra Academy for the purpose of the film.

Manju Warrier replaces Vidya Balan in Aami

Putting an end to controversies Malayalam actress Manju Warrier announced that she would be playing the role of iconic writer Kamala Das in veteran director Kamal's film 'Aami'. Vidya Balan had backed off from the role and it was being said that yesteryear actress Parvathy (Actor Jayaram's wife) would sign in for the project. Finally, it was Manju who had worked with Kamal in movies 'Ee puzhayum kadannu' (1996) and 'Krishnagudiyil oru Pranayakalathu' (1997) destined to play the role.

Manju said that she was thrilled to play the legendary writer who influenced a whole generation with her writing and thanked the director for choosing her. She stated that she is excited about working with the director again after a long gap of 20 years and also requested the people of Kerala not to mix politics with cinema and spare the movie from controversies. Director Kamal had triggered the members of many political parties by supporting people arrested for disrespecting the national anthem in the cinema hall.
