Film exhibitors across Tamil Nadu share their opinion about the current trade scenario

Due to the currency panic issue that is prevailing in the country, there is an unrest among theater owners right now. Apparently, shortages of 50 and 100 rupee notes have reduced the footfalls in theatres drastically over the past 36 hours. Many shows across Tamil Nadu have been cancelled.

We tried to get in touch with some of the exhibitors from different parts of the state regarding how the currency issue has affected them since yesterday and how will AYM be welcomed if released this weekend.

Meenakshi Sundaram, theatre manager - Mayajaal (Chennai)

"AYM is on track to release tomorrow. We predict a definite drop in the 1st weekend collections. 65-70% of ours tickets are booked through online, so that section people are likely to visit the theatres  whereas we can expect a drop of 10-20% with the section of people who prefers to buy tickets at the counter."

Raghul, Proprietor - Gopi Krishna (Theni)

"We have experienced one of the worst turnouts in recent times and our collections have taken a beating. We are being pushed to cancel a couple of shows. F&B is performing poorly as the turnout is less and people don’t prefer to buy any snacks. And wastage of food looks inevitable at the moment. We are uncertain how AYM will be received if released tomorrow."

Reports from a couple of theatre owners in Madurai

"No one comes to theatre now and we feel it is better if there are no releases tomorrow."
