Director Arun Chidambaram’s ‘Kanavu Variyam’ has won 2 Prestigious Remi Awards at WorldFest-Houston. This feature based on Power-cuts in villages across Tamil Nadu has won the Platinum Remi Award for Best Theatrical Feature Film and a song from the film ‘Kalla Manna’ has won the Silver Remi Award for Best Children’s Song at 49th WorldFest-Houston. These awards were presented to Director Arun Chidambaram, along with the film's Co- Producer Karthik Chidambaram.
“When the awards in gold cadre were announced, I was very nervous and also felt slightly low when they did not call out our film’s name in that category. But, later when they announced the platinum awards, I was thrilled and felt more than happy.” said Arun Chidambaram while sharing his experience at the festival’s award ceremony with Behindwoods.
According to the WorldFest jury, in a scale of 100, a film that scores between 85 to 89 is awarded a Silver Remi; 90 to 94 is awarded a Gold Remi and one which scores between 95 and 99 wins a Platinum Remi award. It is notable that Arun Chidambaram is the first Tamil director to win 2 REMI Awards.
“I have myself released Tamil films in international forums and the audience turnout is usually low. It was very unlikely and gave us a sweet surprise when we saw so many Tamilians, Indians and also foreigners who came in huge numbers to watch the film. I was glad that our film was aloted a big screen and was scheduled at a prime time by the orgaanisers; this also stands as a reason for the unexpected reception we witnessed,” claims Arun with joy.
This indeed is a feat to rejoice upon! Way to go Arun!
