Simbu is very friendly with me!

Nov 08, 2013

Introduced into cinema as an antagonist and later playing numerous characters across many languages, actor Babu Antony stands tall as an eminent actor in Indian cinema.

The actor has played important roles in movies like Poovizhi Vasalile, Attagasam, Vinnaithaandi Varuvaayaa and Kanchana.

In conversation with the actor, we got some interesting information about his upcoming movies and his experience working in the Tamil industry.

You've worked in numerous films across many languages like Malayalam, Tamil and Hindi. How has the journey been?

It's a great experience working with different directors and actors across different languages. It is a great school. I am learning a lot.

The first question that anyone would ask a tall person is "What's your height", even Simbu asks you this question in Vinnaithaandi Varuvaayaa

6'3" (He interrupts and laughs)

How often are you asked this question from people?

A lot of people ask me this question. Especially in Facebook! They just want to confirm. They know that I am tall, they just want to confirm how tall. May be they have bets between each other. (Laughs)

You're working in Kaakka Muttai at the moment. Can you tell us your role in the movie?

The movie is based on kids in the slum and about their dreams. I am not allowed to tell the story. But I am playing the central character of a big business man who is planning to start his business where the slum area is. It disrupts their lives and becomes a big problem in the media. It is a very interesting story.

Simbu is playing a guest appearance in the movie. I have a combination scene with him. It was nice meeting Simbu again after working in Vinnaithaandi Varuvaayaa. He has been very friendly with me and was very happy to see me again. I was happy to see him again too.

We've also heard that you are playing an important role in Vasanthabalan's Kaaviya Thalaivan. Can you tell us something about your role in the movie?

Its a very challenging role and I am happy to take it up. The movie is set in the 1940's. I am playing the role of an art loving village chief who is very passionate about stage plays and stage actors.

So what kind of story would your first directorial venture have?

I am planning to make a Malayalam movie called Piano that will be remade in Tamil and Hindi later on. It is a universal subject. It would be a love story between an Indian poet and a British musician. It has got action because the poet is a martial artist. I will explore our ancient culture where there were kings and warriors and also poets and painters. It will have action, drama, suspense and good music.

Your son sang a song in a movie. Can you tell us about that?

Yeah he sang a song in the movie Philips and the monkey pen. It has come out well. He was actually approached to act in the movie, but he was too young to play the character. (You can catch the song in the below link)

You are a Fifth Dan Black Belt martial artist. Is your son going to pursue martial arts too?

He has started practice already. It has been three months. He is also interested in singing. We're planning to send him for singing practice too.

Your future plans

I have a lot of audience for an action hero. There is a huge demand for movies like that. I used to do a lot of action in the 90's. I want to do good action movies. I have been selective in Tamil and I am happy that all the movies that I acted in, have done well. I would love to do good characters, even if they are negative I wouldn't mind taking it if the character is powerful.

Babu Antony also has a verified Facebook profile. The actor wishes to be in touch with his fans through his profile.
