'Chennai Express' heading towards culture clash?

Jan 02, 2013

Rohit Shetty’s latest commercial fare ‘Chennai Express’ saw its first look poster revealed today. The explosive poster features the film’s lead Shahrukh Khan and Deepika Padukone with the tagline ‘Ready, Steady, Po’.

But the poster hasn’t gone down too well with our Tamil folk who seem to have taken offence to the way Tamil people and Tamil cinema has been showcased. Notable young film-maker Balaji Mohan, director of Kadhalil Sodhappuvadu Eppadi, politely raised the issue online with a revered Bollywood trade analyst and spoke of his distate of the poster.

The fact that the poster, along with its stereotypical messaging, is bound to reach a massive global audience thanks to SRK’s popularity is one of Balaji’s main concerns. He feels that the manner in which the background ‘rowdies’ were shown in crude and exaggerated way is reason enough to believe that the film-makers of 'Chennai Express' have taken too much liberties with their recreation of contemporary Tamil cinema.

A representative from the film's production house UTV was quick to point out that the film's writer was K. Subaash whose earlier works include the highly acclaimed Sathriyan and Sabaash. The spokesperson asserted that measures were taken in order to not demean any person or culture.
