The title reminds you of those rainy school days when you
made paper boats of different sizes and shapes. And there
was one Kathikappal too, in the lot – with its knife-like
accessory sticking out of its rear. We do not know if this
Kathikappal will evoke such pleasant nostalgic memories, but
the movie's director has apprenticed with Mani Ratnam and
hence it is expected that he will show some potential.

Kathikappal has debutant director Dinesh Selvaraj, erstwhile
assistant to Mani Ratnam, calling the shots. Dinesh
is, incidentally, the son of noted scriptwriter of yesteryear
who was behind cult movies such as Annakili. Now, has
Dinesh inherited his father's genes and knack of storytelling?
Kathikappal is in line with the current trend of thriller
movies and will cash in on the popularity of the genre.
We heard promises tossed at us about the movie's edge-of-the-seat-thriller
scenes and the extended climax scenes.
Debutant Anup is cast alongside the kid-grown-up-to-babe
Kalyani. And musician Chandra Bose plays the role of
a crooked cop whose role is also said to be significant.
The
promos invariably feature a cry-faced Kalyani clutching
the shoulders of Anup. If curiosity needs to be generated
among the movie going public, a few more footages from
the movie are needed to be released in the form of print
ads.

Director Dinesh mentioned that keeping the genre in mind,
he shot a romantic song in a graveyard. Now that's anything
but romantic. But he asserts that the song would be a different
experience for the viewers since no such attempt has been
made earlier.
So Kathikappal is essentially a thriller with debutants aspiring
to hit the bull's eye. If the producers pump up the promotion
activities and make the FM stations repeatedly air a few hummable
songs from the movie, it stands a good chance to get noticed
for the initial pull. Otherwise, only reviews and word-of-mouth
could be the saviors.
