We
know Vikraman for the kinds
of films he delivers, simple
family entertainers packed with
emotion. The director has been
away from the scene for a while
but is now coming back with
the team that gave him one of
his career’s biggest hits.
Around nine years ago, Vaanathai Pole made a huge impact at the
box office with its endearing
sentiments and lively comedy
that everyone could connect
to. It is also one of those
rare films over the |

past
decade that showed Vijayakanth as a soft
spoken family man rather than in his usual
savior roles. Now, the same team returns
to give us something very similar and hopefully
as enjoyable, Mariyadhai.
Director Vikraman has said that this movie
is dedicated to the audience whose tastes
have been underestimated by film makers
who have repeatedly provided them with crass
commercials full of obscenity and under
the belt comedy. Mariyadhai will be a movie
that will give the audience the respect
it deserves. Vikraman is not known to repeat
the cast from any of his previous films,
Mariyadhai is the first instance when he
has gone back to a once used combination
and that is not without good reason, Vaanathai Pole still remains as a sweet memory in
many a heart. The director said that Mariyadhai
too will be a regular Vikraman movie, with
the lighter moments and sentimental scenes
appearing at regular intervals, but this
time, the dose will be stronger. And, the
most striking feature about Vikraman’s
films are their simplicity, be it in the
story itself or the way in which it has
been filmed, there is a feel of life being
depicted on screen as it is, Mariyadhai
will be no different.
Vijayakanth returns to a pleasant character(s)
(he plays a double role) perhaps for the
first time since Vaanathai Pole. It will
definitely be good to see him in a different
light. Ambika will be seen in a role of
substance after a long time while Meena
and Meera Jasmine are in roles of equal
importance. All the female characters in
the movie have ample footage and scope for
performance, as it should be in any family
subject. Ramesh Khanna will be seen once
again and will hopefully evoke the same
laughter that he did in Vaanathai Pole.
Music by Vijay Anthony has been a revelation
because we have got to hear some tunes that
are not generally associated with the composer
who very recently gave us ‘Nakka Mukka’
and the ‘new age Aathi Choodi’.
Camera has been handled by Andrews.
More than anything else, Mariyadhai is going
to be a simple story woven intricately around
family relationships and emotions. In an
industry that is starved of such family
subjects, may Mariyadhai bring in the trend
once again!
