passes away last night

actor and dream girl of the yesteryears
Padmini succumbed to a heart attack yesterday
(24/09/06) night in the Appollo Hospitals.
Padmini’s name is synonymous with
Bharathanatiyam and she was a versatile
actor who reigned the Tamil, Hindi, Telugu
and Malayalam industry for more than two
decades.
Padmini
who is a multilingual person has worked
in more than 250 films and paired
with Sivaji and MGR in more than 60
films. She started her journey at
the age of 17 with a hindi movie ‘Kalpana’.
She went on to capture the hearts
of millions with her acting and dancing
prowess. Padmini started her dance
lessons at the mere age of 4.
Padmini was born in 1932 in Poojapura
in Trivandrum as the second daughter
of Thankappan Pillai. She along with
her two sisters Lalitha and Ragini
went on to rule the silver screen
for years together and the three sisters
were called Travancore sisters.
After
retiring from the movies, she started
her own dance school Padmini School of
Fine Arts in New Jersey, which has grown
to one of the best places for Indian classical
dances in the States. Padmini was married
to Dr. K. T. Ramachandran on 1961 who
passed away in 1981 after 20 years of
marital bliss. The couple has a son who
is settled in the States.
Padmini was last seen in public in the
Chief Minister felicitation ceremony on
Saturday night (23/09/06) on a wheel chair.
She complained of illness at the function
and was immediately admitted to the Apollo
Hospitals. Doctors’ attempt to save
her life proved futile and she passed
away.
