Whereas the situation is reversed where the
Tamil film industry is concerned, as more and
more masala movie are churned out, even though
there were sparkles here and there like Paruthiveeran,
Mozhi, and Chennai 600028. But, they were few
and far apart. So, will it be fair to say that
Tamil cinemas are on par with the Hindi films?
But young directors like Murugadoss, Ameer, Cheran,
Venkat Prabhu, Selvaraghavan have indeed given
us a ray of hope and we can be rest assured that
the Tamil industry will in fact reach the worldwide
audience and bring glory to the Tamil language.
Now let’s go to the list of movies hitting
the screens this Friday. From now on, this article
will also contain a comment on each movie, which
will make it clear why you should watch the movie
and why you shouldn’t. But the choice is
yours, of course. So let’s start this week’s
round up with the Kollywood entry.
Naalaiya Pozhuthum Unnodu is Prithvi’s second
film, the son of actor Pandiarajan. The movie,
set in the rural background, is a love story of
two adolescents. But the movie has nothing to
boast, though Prithvi’s first movie was
given a decent rating by the critics. However,
the crew is upbeat about this project and confident
that it would be a big hit.
Why you should watch this movie: Because Prithvi
promised a lot in his first movie and Naalaiya Pozhuthum Unnodu has a positive buzz surrounding
it.
Why you shouldn’t watch the movie: The
A center junta will probably give this a miss.
Fans of Robin Williams will be ready, with their
purse open, as the star comes back with his latest
comedy “Licence to Wed.” But the movie
was rejected outright in the US and its success
at the Indian box office is a far cry. Licence
to Wed is about a priest who runs a couple through
various tests before giving them a go ahead to
enter the holy matrimony. The movie was criticized
for its unfunny dialogues and Robin Williams’
performance was mostly disliked. The film is sure
to get a good opening due to the actor’s
fan following but after that its collection is
bound to take a beating.
Why you should watch the movie: The premises
seem to be funny.
Why you shouldn’t watch the movie: People
who have seen the promos would have come to a
conclusion by now.
Lage Chunari Main Daag is one of the well-publicized
movies this year. The queen of Bollywood, Rani
Mukharjee plays a simple girl, who due to her
family problems is forced to enter skin trade.
Rani is not alone, as an array of stars including
Jaya Bachchan, Abhishek Bachchan, Kunal Kapoor
and Konkana Sen Sharma share the screen space
with her. The movie is directed by Pradeep Sarkar,
whose debut film Parineetha was not just a critic’s
favorite but also went on to become a box office
hit. The trailer looks very impressive, but the
story does have a similarity to the yesteryear
Balachandar’s controversial Tamil movie
“Arangetram,” which was also remade
in Hindi by the ace director himself starring
Mumtaz and Rajesh Khanna titled “Aaina.”
But Pradeep Sarkar denies any inspiration. Whether
the movie has drawn inspiration from Arangetram
needs to be seen.
Why you should watch the movie: Pradeep Sarkar’s
Parineeta was a masterpiece. And many big names
have been roped in, so it should be good.
Why you shouldn’t watch the movie: You
have already seen “Aaina” or “Arangetram.”
And the movie might not be for people who come
to the theatres for entertainment, as this will
surely be very hard hitting.
Behindwoods pick of the week –
Bhool Bhulaiya
Bhool Bhulaiya is finally out. A remake of a
classic, which has seen many forms and is by far
the most popular movie in South India as the original
version, Fazil's Manuchithrathazhu was a mega
blockbuster in Malayalam. This was an inspiration
to P. Vasu's Kannada movie, Aptha Mithra starring
mega star Vishnuvardan. The movie broke many records
and then came the Tamil version, Chandramukhi,
directed by the same director with superstar Rajnikanth
in the lead. Chandramukhi went on to make history
as it is still running in a theatre in Chennai
crossing over 850 days. Its Telugu dubbing also
became a big hit and it is about time that the
Hindi people too experienced this classic.
The person who is going to showcase this movie
to the Hindi junta is Priyadarshan. And the director
comes with his trusted band of actors - Akshay
Kumar, Paresh Rawal and Rajpal Yadav. The newbies
into the group are Shiney Ahuja and Vidya Balan
and the latter will be dancing for the Hindi “Raa
Raa” song. The movie has superb music scored
by Pritam - especially the “Hare Ram”
song has captured the fantasies of many. The Hindi
junta should be eager to see a comical horror
and the south Indians are keen to see how Priyadarshan
has handled this classic.
Why you should see this movie: If you’re
eager for some fright and laughter, the promos
promise a heavy dosage of both.
Why you shouldn’t watch the movie: Because
you have witnessed many remakes of classics going
wrong, like RGV Ki Aag, Victoria No. 203, Don
(to a certain extent) and you don’t want
to take the risk.
Verdict – Two girls are
saying “Raa Raa” in different moods.
You decide.
