Thank god it’s Friday
       - Nancy Drew’s mighty heart
By Harish V
November 16, 2007
After a hectic Deepavali session, we are back to business discussing a Friday that offers pretty much nothing. We did see that the last week was controlled by Kollywood and Bollywood with as much as 6 releases in Tamil and two biggies in Hindi released. The Deepavali race was a well-fought race in which
A Mighty Heart

Om Shanthi Om (which was by the way last week’s pick of the week), Vel and Polladhavan are emerging as frontrunners. Not to mention, this week’s two releases don’t pose any threat to the race. The two in question are the Hollywood movies Nancy drew and A Mighty heart.

Nancy Drew

Nancy drew is a popular teen detective novel which is adapted to big screens now. Thankfully the movie is quite interesting and will surely be a delight for the fans of the book. Emma Roberts, a small time Hollywood actress plays the famous character and the movie is directed by Andrew Fleming who is again a small time director whose only famous movie is “The Craft”. Many in India are unfamiliar with his works. And this movie too will hardly make an impact in the Indian theatres but the fans of the book might want to see their favorite teen detective in action on the big screen solving the death of a movie star.

Why you should see it? – Because you are a big fan of Nancy drew

Why you shouldn’t? – Because you have other important work to do.

And you guessed it right; this week’s pick of the week is the only other picture releasing this week, A Mighty heart.

Behindwoods.com pick of the week – A Mighty Heart

Once in a while Hollywood churns out a movie, which targets for the coveted academy awards. A Mighty heart is one such film; the film is based on Marianne Pearl's account of the terrifying and unforgettable story of her husband, Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl's life and death. Angelina Jolie, the darling of the box office comes up with tremendous performance as Marianne Pearl. The movie is said to bring Angelina Jolie the Oscar for the second time. The actress got a best supporting actress award for her role in Girl Interrupted. She has out done herself in this movie by giving her career’s best performance yet. However, the Oscar judges have some peculiar ways of selecting the winners as many unexpected judgments have been made earlier. So the award might or might not land in the hands of this Tomb Raider. Remember the recent mishaps while Tom Hanks who was a sure shot winner for his exceptional acting in Cast Away, the award was given away to Russell Crowe for his performance in The Gladiator, a worthy candidate though. And the very next year Russell Crowe came up with a superlative performance in “A beautiful mind” but to everyone’s surprise, the Oscar went to Denzel Washington for his Training days. So predicting the Oscars are like predicting the national awards although we know that was a bad comparison.

But remember the movie is quite slow and some might also find the similarities the movie has with Mani Ratnam’s Roja (refer our article on the similarities of the movie to Roja a few months back). Indian actor Irfan khan also plays an important role in the movie. It’s a good movie but not everyone’s cup of tea.

Why you should see it? – Because you are a big fan of Angelina Jolie. And even if you are not, once you see this movie you will become one.

Why you shouldn’t? – Daniel pearl’s death is still fresh in our minds and the very topic brings a shiver up our spines as you are not the mightiest of hearts.

Bottom line – Most of the Deepavali movie’s tickets are now available.
