Saawariya did have an impressive opening as well
in all the above-mentioned three countries, in
spite of the drubbing it received from critics.
The movie grossed $ 542,192 in the US box office
at the rate of $ 6,378 per screen securing the
twenty-fourth spot; not bad at all for the movie
touted to be a flop. It’s collections from
the UK, where it secured the twelfth spot, is
$336,437 with an average per screen collection
of $7,009. Saawariya is placed at the sixteenth
spot in the Aussie box office raking in $94,339
and $5,549 per screen.
What is even more surprising is that Tami films
Azhagiya Tamil Magan and Vel have done exceptionally
well at the UK box office collecting $199,693
and $43,191, respectively with an impressive per
screen averages of $11,094 and $7,199 in theatres.
This trend of Tamil movies doing well at the UK
box office is prominent after Sivaji, which exposed
Tamil cinema to the non-Tamil speaking Indian
fraternity. Happy days are sure to begin here
with biggies like Billa and Dasavatharam ready
to hit the screens in the months to come.
