This movie is based on the critically acclaimed
novel by Monica Ali, by the same name. It is the
story of a young Bangladeshi girl Nazneen played
by Tannishta Chatterjee, who settles for an arranged
marriage to middle aged Chanu Ahmed played by
Satish Kaushik and ends up seeing her soul die
a slow death while her sister back home is living
life to the fullest. This film set in the 1980’s
east London which houses the Bangladeshi community
and the backlash it faced from the locals. Monica
Ali on seeing the film had praised Satish Kaushik’s
performance in an interview to the Guardian and
said that it was a slightly unnerving experience
because it looked like her character just walked
out of the page. Satish was overwhelmed by this
and had said "To get such a reaction from
the author! Because writers are very wary, you
know, if their characters are being portrayed
in the right spirit or not." We wish this
experience will have a positive influence on his
otherwise masala fare he dishes out as a director.
