“Dasavatharam, the Kamal starrer
may not get tax exemption as the word
is a pure Sanskrit one”, says
veteran lawyer cum journalist cum
actor Cho Ramaswamy. According to
him, this exemption of tax for films
with Tamil names is noting but a political
gimmick. The current government should
concentrate more on constructive activities.
Secondly, Cho is of the opinion, that
the committee should examine the content
of the movie for tax exemption rather
than the title. He also felt that
Sivaji will get tax rebate as it is
a proper noun.
Speaking
on the same issue, Rama Narayan, President
of Tamil Film Producer’s council (TFPC)
opines that non-Tamil words which have assimilated
themselves in to the language by their day
-today usage would not be questioned. As
per him, the last word rests only with the
Department of Commercial taxes. The TFPC
may aid a producer in putting out an appeal.
But beyond that the council cannot proceed
further.
