In the second instance of a stalemate in Malayalam
cinema in the last three years, the Producer’s
council decided to put a stop to all shooting
activities in the industry from July 31st.
This comes after no decision was reached after
rounds of discussions with MACTA ( the technicians
association). MACTA had put forth some demands
that the Producers’ council was not
willing to accept.

Some of the demands of MACTA included raising the pay
of drivers, spot boys and other workers on the sets. But
the demand that seemed to have caused the disagreement
is as follows. MACTA wanted the Superstars (they must
have meant Mohanlal, Mammotty and Dileep) of Malayalam
cinema to stay away from shooting and other film making
activities for 6 months. The reason behind this demand
is not clear, but apparently no reason can be good enough
to ask them to keep away. The Producer’s council
felt the same way. The President of the Council is firm
that it is the Producer’s prerogative to decide
what type of movies to finance and whom to put their money
on.
The last such stalemate in Malayalam cinema had occurred
back in 2004 when the tiff was between the Producer’s
council and the actors’ association AMMA. Then,
the producers had been able to make the stars agree to
a few new terms and conditions to be included in every
contract. Let’s see what happens this time round.
