The clash of the sequels has resulted in a
fractured mandate (similar to what happens
with elections in India) but we do have a
winner. Many battles, small and big were fought
at the box office and finally it were the
outlaws who won the war and took the treasure
but not before being a good scare by a masked
superhero and an ugly ogre along with a donkey.

The latter might look an unlikely contender but remember,
David did take on and defeat Goliath. But this time Goliath
had the final laugh and Walt Disney is laughing its way
to the bank that has already swollen by $401 million.
That’s right. $401 million is the amount that the
‘Pirates of the Caribbean-At the World’s end’
has managed to make in its six days at the box office
and this is officially the new world record for the biggest
opening worldwide. This special effects multi-starrer
has managed to overawe audience world over with its sheer
magnificence on screen, be it with star presence or visuals.
The record for the biggest opening worldwide had been
set fresh just three weeks ago by Spiderman-3 but that’s
what big summers are all about, big movies and big money.
But as said earlier, the Pirates have won the war but
a few battles did fall into Spiderman’s kitty and
one among them is the US box office. The Pirates might
have conquered the world but at home they have been hit
by Spidey phenomenon which has set the new record for
biggest opening. It is interesting to note that at home
the Pirates have been given the slip even by the Ogre
and his donkey (Shrek-3, in case you did not understand);
more interestingly the third edition of the Pirates has
not been able to emulate the performance of its prequel
either and that in spite of having the advantage of opening
over a four day weekend. We can play around with the numbers
over the four days and the screen averages and territory
averages, ticket rates and many more confusing details,
but we prefer to keep things simple. Globally, the Pirates
have won but in the USA Spiderman is winner, not to forget
Shrek-3. That’s what we call a fractured mandate.
The battles are not over yet as the Pirates are yet to
touch Indian shores. They do so in two days time and in
a week or so we will know who is the winner of the Indian
leg of this ‘Around the world in 20 days’
war. Any guesses…
