Mani Ratnam’s Guru has proved to be
the saving grace for Bollywood in the mid
year report card. None of the other releases,
big or small have been able to make a serious
impression at the box office. There has been
the occasional small sweet film that has grabbed
attention like Honeymoon Travels Pvt.Ltd.
and this year’s biggest surprise packet
Bheja Fry.

Traffic Signal too did create quite a stir, but it was
only Guru that has been declared a universal hit, successful
at all release centers. It has done equally well in the
Bombay circuit, the north as well as in the overseas market.
It’s net gross amount stands at close to 30 crores.
This is miles ahead of the year’s biggest release
Salaam-e-Ishq which had managed just about half the amount.
Even the big summer bonanza Ta Ra Rum Pum currently stands
at close to 20 crores and is fast losing steam at the
box office and chances of it overhauling Guru seem shaky.
On a different perspective, Guru has been the best in
the careers of the main members of the cast and crew.
This is undisputedly Abhishek Bachchan’s biggest
solo hit of his career. This is also being touted as one
of Aishwarya Rai’s finest performances as an actress.
Guru is also Mani Ratnam’s first straight Hindi
film that has been accorded the hit status. Though his
earlier Hindi films Yuva and Dil Se had come in for appreciation,
they had failed to get the sort of box office response
that would have made them commercial successes. Their
good run had been limited to the cities.
The Guru success story has prompted Mani to plan his next
film too in Hindi. That will be the Aamir khan starrer
Lajjo.
