Mahendran is one of the most sensitive
filmmakers in Tamil cinema. His films
like Uthirippookal, Nenjathai Killadhe,
Mullum Malarum are still appreciated
for their subtle handling of strong
emotions. Never one given to melodrama
or star power, he relies on the development
of the plot with the right rhythm.
His current project, Sasanam had been
in the making for a long time. It
is the story of a man who sells off
his son to let him escape from the
clutches of poverty. As the budget
was overrun, Mahendran approached
NFDC which has taken over the financing
of the film.
