Whoever said that mainstream cinema
does nothing but entertain has got
it awfully wrong. If recent incidents
in Tamil Nadu are any indication,
then we are quite sure that cinema
made for the masses does bring about
a lasting change in some lives. Recently,
a young couple who had decided to
separate watched the movie Mercuryppookkal
with Srikanth and Meera Jasmine in
the lead and said no to divorce. Similarly,
another interesting incident has happened
in Thanjavur. Ramesh (name changed)
is a native of Thanjavur. |

He
ran a hotel in Chennai and was married
to Nalini (name changed). They had
a son. His business ran into losses
and he left to Kuwait leaving behind
his wife and son. When he came back
after five years, he found that Nalini
had been seduced by a close friend
of his and both had eloped. Devastated
by the episode, he became almost insane.
Gathering his wits about, he settled
down in a job back in Chennai. He
saw the movie, Thiruttuppayale. |

The
movie which had Jeevan, Sonia Agarwal and
Malavika and carried a similar story of extramarital
affair. Manoj K Jain’s love for the
unfaithful wife and the grueling revenge that
he extracts from the traitor touched a chord
in him. As fate would have it, he met his
wife at a telephone booth, deserted by her
paramour. He decided to forgive her and take
her back. Both went to a temple and sought
divine blessings for a new chapter in their
lives. On hearing about this incident, director
Susi. Ganesan invited them over to his house.
They spent an evening with the director who
entertained and spoke at length with them.
He congratulated them for the decision and
wished them good luck. He also gave them a
present of Rs. 25,000.
Ramesh and Ganesan echoed the view that cinema
should be meaningful so as to bring positive
changes in people’s lives. We second
their view. Good going, guys! |
