The
lady nevertheless carries on with characteristic
determination and was in Cannes last week
to promote her next crossover film, Provoked.
The film is a poignant tale of a Punjabi
woman who marries an NRI and is subjected
to domestic violence for nearly 10 years.
She finally breaks free by killing her husband.
Based on the real life story of Kiranjit
Ahluwalia, whose case in the mid-1980s created
a stir of conscience in British society
regarding its immigration laws, Ash’s
performance is said to be simply superb.
Keeping her company is another dusky beauty,
Nandita Das. At the press conference after
the screening, scribes were quite eager
to know why she chose the role. She said
that she could empathise with the woman.
Then came the question, has she ever suffered
domestic violence. There was a pause and
she replied, ”yes”. Jaws dropped
and some scribes gathered their wits about
and asked her how. She simply said, “wait
for my biography”.
Well, folks whatever the green-eyed babe
meant, it has sent the international media
in a tizzy. |
