Year's day. It is that time of the year when the biggest star wars of the film industry happen. Not one Tamil New Years day has passed without a really big release, if not more. 2005 should have been the biggest Tamil New Year at the box office this millennium with Chandramukhi, Mumbai Express and Sachein releasing on the same day. Last year was relatively low key with only Tirupati being the big release and that too had been a damp squib. 2007 was expected to rock with Sivaji releasing and that might partially be the reason for no other big movie slated for release. Kreedom arrives on the 1st of May. So what have we got, come Apr.14. We have Cheran's third poem on screen, Mayakkannadi.
People might have thought that this man was crazy to be releasing his movie alongside Superstar's Sivaji, something even the kingpins of the industry would think twice before doing. But Cheran had enough confidence in his work and the people's choice to stick to his decision. As the saying goes, 'fortune favors the prepared mind'. Cheran was prepared to take on anything and look at how fortune has smiled upon him. As things stand now, Mayakkannadi will be running a one horse race at the box office for nearly three weeks till Sivaji releases. If the movie is good enough 3 weeks is more than enough time to make good the investment and some serious profits too.
Cheran is alert to the situation and has all of a sudden taken a snap decision to give Mayakkannadi a wider release through the states. Work is going on in top gear to complete all post production processes and prepare an increased number of prints for the D-Day. Well, Cheran has nothing to worry; he seems to have everything going for him. The holiday season, best time to release a film, no competition for miles around, what else can he ask for? For Tamil New Year's day, Cheran is the last man standing.
Staying with Cheran, he is taking no breaks. The launch of his next movie Pirivom Sandhippom was held at Chennai recently. The film will be directed by Karu Palaniappan and will have Kamalinee Mukherjee (Vettaiyaadu Vilaiyaadu) opposite him. Hoardings suggest a movie revolving around the 'goodbyes are not forever' theme. Shooting starts in the second week of April.
