Not that the industry inhabitants would love to spend a day out at the Central Jail. As is, the notorious Central Jail - from where Chennai's Railway Station presumably derived its name - has been shifted to Puzhal recently. The old Central Jail - that has always been a producer's

dream owing to its sprawling campus, especially when it comes to filming jail scenes - is deserted since the government has not made any plans yet to utilize the area.
Given the area of the campus, 10 to 15 movies can be shot on any given day. Reports suggest that the industrywallas have approached the government requesting consent to conduct shoots in the jail campus. In the present situation, jail shoots are being carried out in sets erected in the KMC campus. Remember the gripping scenes of such genre that appear in Virumandi and Mahanadi. Those scenes were shot in erected sets and not in real jails.
News has it that the producers are ready to pay the government a rent of Rs. 25,000 per day for shooting in the old Central Jail. Quite an honor to the Jail and a money-spinning activity to the government if it decides to let the place out for the purpose.
