It was just the crack of dawn but the crowds
were there, the queues were long and excitement
was in the air. Who knows, those at the front
of the queue might have been waiting there
from the previous night or even earlier. No
one wants to miss the opportunity of being
the first to see the grand spectacle on the
big screen.

Advance bookings for Sivaji opened across the city on
Sunday the 10th of June and the response was tremendously
humungous (sorry, ran out of superlatives), the sort of
response only the Superstar can command and this one looked
big even by his standards.
The distributors might be struggling to stop themselves
from declaring the movie a hit four days before its release,
but that’s how things are looking. Go to any theater
in the city that is going to release Sivaji and try getting
a ticket; that is if you can brave long hours in the sweltering
heat, being squashed in a horde of humanity, crushed to
the walls of enclosures without losing your sanity or
your money and you will find that you will have to preserve
your ticket till the very end of June or even later to
watch Sivaji in a theater. That’s right, all the
tickets for the first week have been sold out in all theaters
in the city and this was the report that came in sometime
around noon on Sunday. This report being written in the
early hours of Monday morning after futile attempts at
getting further reports can only assume that the second
week would have been sold out by the time counters closed
on Sunday evening. So if you have not already got your
ticket or if one of your very close relatives (whom you
have been praising sky high for the last few weeks anticipating
this) is not the manager of one of the theaters screening
Sivaji then forget about watching the movie on the big
screen in the foreseeable future. July first week might
be the best you can hope for.
18 theaters in the city are going to show Sivaji come
June 15th. These include Sathyam complex, Abirami (3 screens),
Udhayam, Devi, AVM Rajeswari, Bharath, Maharani, Melody,
Kamala and a few others. According to estimates that is
a combined capacity of around 15000 people. Try calculating
the number of people who would have watched the movie
by the first week only in Chennai city. All theaters had
to make special arrangements to manage the crowds at their
premises and the crowds were nothing short of hysteric.
People not familiar with this sort of scene could have
been a bit shaken; they could have mistaken this for some
huge political gathering or festival. They also would
have mistaken Rajni to be some sort of deity as the fans
were busy conducting Palabhishekam to his king size cutouts
outside theaters. This is something that is not seen even
on the day of release of other movies.
All this four days before the release of the movie, the
phenomenal celebrations that will happen on the first
day of Sivaji in theaters will have to be seen to be believed.
Even if you have not got your tickets be sure to hang
around the theaters, there will be firecrackers and lots
of other stuff you will get to see only during Deepavali
and Pongal.
4 days to go……
