These days every director is waking
up to animal rights. Following the
difficulties faced by Imsai Arasan
due to the guidelines of the Animal
Welfare Board, Kollywood directors
are becoming cautious about using
animals in their films.
Take Thirumurugan, of Metti Oli
fame, who is directing Emdon Magan
with Bharat and Gopika in the lead.
He had applied and got permission
from the Animal welfare Board about
using a scorpion- yes, a scorpion-
in the film.

|
FThe
Board issued permission with stringent conditions
about care for the animal during and after
the shooting.
As per the story, Bharat wants to set up a
chance to meet his sweetheart, Gopika. As
he is on the lookout for a perfect opportunity,
it happens in the form of a scorpion bite
to Gopika. To shoot this scene, the scorpion
was brought with great care and an attendant
was near by. On the first day, he did not
co-operate well with the heroine. Gopika squealed
with fear when he at last climbed on to her
hand. Pack up for day one. Meanwhile the director
advised Gopika to get familiar with Mr. Scorpion.
On the second day, the shooting was held between
9 p.m. and midnight and the scene was successfully
okayed. After the shoot, a veterinary doctor
was summoned who examined scorpion and declared
him fit. |
|
While to all those watching the
proceedings, it all seemed quite
artificial, the doctor said that
using animals in shooting can be
risky both to the animals themselves
and humans. For example, snakes
and scorpions do not sting on their
own, but do so in response to some
stimuli. So, inadvertently if any
mistake happens during the shooting,
some one might get stung and the
poor animal blamed. Even in this
film, Gopika just held the scorpion
in her hand and that is why he did
not sting her.
