Chief
Minister M Karunanidhi unveiled the statue
of AV Meiyappan, yesterday at the South Indian
Film Chamber campus. Commemorating AV Meiyappan’s
centenary year, the Chief Minister participated
in the event. |

This
being the platinum year of Indian
Talkies, Mr Karunanidhi also laid
the foundation stone for SIFCC’s
new building and inaugurated Tamil
Film Producers Council’s new
premises.
Speaking at the event, Kalaingar
Karunanidhi recalled the immense
service of AV Meiyappan towards
the Tamil movement in early part
of last century. He reminisced on
how he had written the scripts to
both ‘Parasakthi’ and
‘Mandirakumari’ which
launched Sivaji Ganesan and MG Ramachandaran
respectively. Both were projects,
which involved AV Meiyappan personally.

The
Chief Minister fondly recalled those days
and said the contributions were immense. |

The event was attended by the who’s
who of the southern film fraternity.
They thanked the Chief Minister for
his largesse and paid glowing tribute
to the octogenarian leader. Parithi
Ilamvazhuthi, minister for Information
and Publicity said this government
had promised much of its promise to
the film industry within three months.
DVS Raju also indicated the same.
K Nanda Kumar, not the one to miss
such an opportunity, pleaded with
Mr Karunanidhi to use his good offices
to convince his friends at the Kerala
Government to extend tax benefits
to the Malayalam films. Nanda Kumar
is the president of the Kerala FCC.

At
the event, prominent film personalities
paid glowing tribute to the Chief Minister
himself. Kamal Hassan, speaking on the occasion,
said Mr. Karunanidhi has always acted in
a manner that is apolitical when it came
to the film world. He praised the Chief
Minister for attending to the needs of the
fraternity in a timely fashion. He also
said, there was such magnanimity in his
heart to forgive people who had spoken out
bitterly against him.
Supersar Rajinikanth is in Delhi, for shooting
Sivaji. Therefore he was unable to attend
the function. |
