“Uyir
makers need to be whipped” - Vadivelu |

The
occasion was the 100th day celebrations
of the Madhavan starrer ‘Thambi’,
but what made the news was something entirely
different. Among the impressive guest list
at the function was ‘Imsai Arasan’
Vadivelu. |
|
|
The
on screen comedian gave vent to
his feelings about, what he thought
was the deterioration of the Tamil
film industry.
He
was referring in particular, to
the recently released Uyir starring
Srikanth and more notedly Sangeetha,
who played the scheming sister in
law of Srikanth. The theme of the
movie was very bold by any standards
with the sister in law harbouring
a secret affection for her brother
in law. It is quite obvious that
this theme does not conform to the
norms of marital loyalty of Tamil
culture.

Vadivelu was visibly incensed with
this very fact and used very strong
words during his address at the function
to make his feelings known to everyone
around. He lambasted the makers of
Uyir for choosing a theme such as
this, which according to him questioned
the very institution of marriage and
family. He said that if filmmakers
were not able to find themes that
were not worthy of our culture, then
they better not make films at all.
He opined that good cinema is one
that can be watched by the entire
family without parents being concerned
of any negative influence on young
minds. |

He
pointed out that his own ‘Imsai Arasan’
was a shining example of good cinema. Uyir,
according to him was a movie that could
possibly sow the seeds of doubt in a peaceful
joint family.
In a bid to be taken seriously, he said
that he was a comedian only on screen, and
off it he was as serious as anyone else,
he also added that the success of ‘Imsai
Arasan’ had not gone to his head.
He had no qualms in saying that the makers
of movies such as Uyir deserved nothing
better than a sound whipping.
He also requested the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister
to take a look into this matter and take
some swift action to prevent such movies
from happening again. Meanwhile, Uyir seems
to be doing well at the box office. |
