Amidst
accolades that were pouring in from all sides
to the Tamil Nadu government for it's decision
to exempt films named in Tamil from entertainment
tax, some food for thought has come in from
an unexpected source. |
|
|
G P Sarathy the president of the Nationalist
Congress Party in Tamil Nadu has strongly
criticized this move by the government.
He has in essence asked the government
not to 'judge a book by its cover'
that is, to not judge a movie by just
it's name and give it such freebies
without actually looking into it's
content.
He is of the opinion that most movies
that are named in Tamil foster nothing
but violence and vulgarity and mislead
the public, especially youngsters
and do not deserve any such benefits. |
|
|
If
the government is keen upon increasing
the prominence of Tamil in films then
it must offer such benefits to movies
that have dialogues entirely in Tamil,
well that seems too much of an ask,
it is difficult to find even a song
nowadays without a few English words
being used to fit the tune.
Sarathy has also called for encouragement
of films that have a strong essence
of authentic Tamil culture |

Mr.Sarathy
sure seems to have a point, but will his
voice coax the government into reconsidering
it's decision, wait and watch. |
