After
a lot of legal wrangling and political controversy,
the ruling government managed to unveil
the statue of Chevalier Sivaji Ganesan at
the point where Radhakrishnan Salai meets
the Marina Beach opposite Mahatma Gandhi
statue near the state police headquarters. |
|
|
A
septuagenarian Gandhian, Srinivasan
had filed a petition in the high court
for changing the location of the statue
as it obstructed the view of the Gandhi
statue. State Advocate General R Viduthalai
told the court that relocating the
statue was not possible for it involved
cutting the central steel rod passing
through the statue and that would
damage the whole statue.
The eight-foot, 750 kg statue, made
of bronze, is the state’s tribute
to a legend that walked tall in the
cinema industry.

|
“If
the court decision had been unfavourable,
you would have had to install a statue
for me too!” he said.
It was a heartfelt statement; Kalaingar
and Sivaji had been friends since
their youth and the bond between them
bordered on the nameless.
The unveiling ceremony lasted for
two hours and anyone who was someone
in Kodambakkam was there to salute
the statue of the master. |

Industry
bigwigs present included AVM Saravanan,
Superstar Rajnikanth, Kamalhassan,
K Bhagyaraj, Vijayakanth and Sivaji’s
star-son Prabhu.
Much to the expectations of the fans
Rajini too spoke in his characteristic
way carrying warmth and meaning.
The ceremony featured celebrated clippings
from Sivaji’s movies followed
by a song rendered by Seerkaazhi Dr
Siva Chidambaram, written especially
for the occasion by Karunanidhi himself.

For
fans of Sivaji, it was a heartwarming event,
their icon standing majestically on the
Marina—a solid reminder of a man they
can never forget. |
