in the court hall: Chief Justice warns

The
legendary Sivaji Ganesan had left
no role touched upon by his impressive
talent. He had come up trumps in several
court room dramas notably, the unforgettable
Barrister Rajinikanth in Gouravam.
Well, his spirit must turning in the
grave at the ongoing legal battle
about installing his statue on Kamaraj
Salai on the Marina beach stretch.
The Tamilnadu state government had
been making arrangements to unveil
the statue on July 21, on the death
anniversary of the actor.

It
stumbled upon a roadblock in the form
of a PIL filed by a freedom fighter,
S. Srinivasan, that the proposed statue
would obstruct the view of the statue
of Gandhiji installed across the road.
The Madras High Court took up the
matter and requested the government
to find an alternative location and
adjourned the hearing. The case came
up again yesterday and the lawyer
on behalf of the petitioner quoted
a Supreme Court order wherein the
government had promised that no statues
would be installed on arterial roads.
Replying to this the learned judges
said,”If we agree to this statue,
then we would be held for contempt
of the Supreme Court order. Then,
the matter would have to be settled
only by the Supreme Court. However,
we do not want to stay the unveiling
ceremony. Therefore, the TN government
would then have to pursue the matter
in its course.”

The Public Prosecutor said,”
Only the petitioner is complaining
that the statue would be an obstruction
and no one else has expressed this
opinion.”
The Chief Justice said, ”No
one in Tamilnadu would ever say no
to a statue of Sivaji Ganesan”.
On hearing this the large crowd of
Sivaji fans who had gathered in court
hall, gave a thumping applause. The
judge was annoyed and warned the Public
Prosecutor that such immature behaviour
would not be tolerated and if they
repeat it again, they would all be
asked to move out of the hall.

He
also wondered sarcastically whether they
had been brought there intentionally.
The judges, while declining to stay the
inauguration, posted the matter to August
21 giving time to the government to approach
the Supreme Court. Therefore, the suspense
has somewhat ended for the time being. The
government is going ahead with the inauguration
and has put out the publicity campaign.
Watch out for the event and its repercussions.
An emotional rollercoaster indeed, Sivaji
Ganesan style! |
