Just
as diehard Tamil film fans were rejoicing
that finally the statue of legendary actor,
Chevalier Sivaji Ganesan would be unveiled
on the 21st of this month, comes the shocker
that there could be some dislocation in
the event. The Madras High Court has requested
the Tamilnadu state Government to consider
moving the statue from its proposed location
on Kamarajar Salai by the Marina beach. |

Chief
Justice A.P. Shah passed the comments
while hearing a Public Interest Litigation
petition filed by a freedom fighter,
C.N. Srinivasan. The petitioner had
claimed that installing the statue
at the planned site was inappropriate
and would cause distress to the sentiments
of freedom fighters. He also claimed
that the statue on Kamarajar Salai
was a violation of the National Highways
Act.
The learned judges echoed the feelings
of the petitioners and said that they
crossed Kamarajar Salai everyday to
reach the courts.

Therefore,
the government would do well to consider
shifting the statue to another location,
if possible. R. Viduthalai, appearing
on behalf of the government said that
Sivaji had stellar roles in cinema
to popularize the sacrifices by freedom
fighters. The judges concurred with
him and said that they were also fans
of the great actor but the present
issue was one of public importance.
The government should find an alternative
location. On behalf of the government,
it was contended that the petitioner
was seeking to disrupt the proceedings
at the eleventh hour. The judges adjourned
the matter to Monday.

Meanwhile,
following court’s suggestion Chief
Minishter Karnunidhi today morning inspected
some alternative locations for the statue.
Finally three spots have been shortlisted
– Bogh Road junction in T Nagar, Simpson
Junction in Annasalai and some other location
in beach. They say that the statue would
be installed in the Bogh Road – Thiagarayar
Road junction preferably since it is near
to the thespian’s house. |
