No
sooner did the Jayamala episode flare up
that we have another temple issue on our
hands. This time round it is talented actress
and National award winner, Meera Jasmine,
allegedly broke rules and entered the Rajarajeswari
Temple in Kannur district. There is a belief
that if you offered the thanga kudam or
Golden Pot to the Goddess, your wishes would
be fulfilled. Former Tamilnadu CM, Jayalalitha
did the offering a couple of years ago.
Women are allowed to see the deity only
after 8.30 pm.

According to the officials, non-Hindus
are not allowed beyond the main
entrance. However, Meera, a Christian
not only entered the inner corridor
but also lit lamps. On being confronted
by the officials who took a while
to recognize her presence, a producer
who was accompanying her said that
she had converted to Hinduism. Unconvinced
by this answer, they requested her
to leave the temple immediately.
There was an argument and finally
she left.

Narrating
the incident she said that she did not intend
to hurt anybody’s sentiment but had
visited the temple only because she felt
that religion was universal. She also regretted
that if she had flouted the rules she was
ready to apologize.
While she did apologize for unwittingly
entering the area forbidden for non-Hindus,
the temple officials convened a meeting
and decided that rituals for purification
would be undertaken. They also decided that
Meera should pay a fine of ten thousand
rupees.
News about the fine was conveyed to Govindan
Kutty, the producer who accompanied Meera
and misinformed that she had become a Hindu.
Meera promptly paid the fine.
