Water
made it to the final five of the foreign
language category in Oscars. When
the nominations were announced yesterday,
the Deepa Mehta directed trilogy ‘Water’
found a place in the final five of
the same category. Banned in India
for its allegedly controversial content,
Water is contending for the coveted
Oscars as an official entry of Canada.
Deepa
Mehta faced stiff resistance in India when she
attempted to film the movie a couple of years
ago in and around Varanasi, in the shores of the
holy river Ganges. Angry protesters vandalized
the sets of the movie and subsequently the shoots
were called off.
However, Deepa, resolute in her decision, conducted
the shoots in Srilanka with Lisa Ray, John Abraham,
and Seema Biswas. Though not released in India,
the movie is receiving critical acclaim in film
festivals around the globe.
Water narrates the gripping tale of the life of
widows abandoned by their family members in Vrindavan.
