This
year nominations for Oscar awards
for foreign films are out and the
much expected Rang De Basanti has
made an early exit. This film directed
by Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra was a blockbuster
and the media sang hosannas on the
entire crew for a long time.
But much to everybody’s surprise and shock,
this film does not figure in the list which was
announced by the Academy of motion Picture of
Art and Science.
But
as Indians, we may not lose heart as yet as
Deepa Mehta’s Water has been short-listed
along with nine other films in the foreign film
category. Water has Bipasha Basu’s friend
John Abraham in the lead role with Lisa Ray
as the heroine. This film set in the British
Raj in India revolves around the life of widows.
Water forms the third film made by Deepa Mehta
in the trilogy of elements after Earth and Fire.
Readers may be aware that the director was forced
to shift her shooting spot to Srilanka from
Benares as people objected to her filming in
the holy city.
