Ramgopal
Varma, he is a man who plays around
with risks. All his career he has
dabbled in big budget productions,
new starcasts, untried themes and
he has emerged as filmmaker who is
as likely to deliver a dud as he is
to rock the box office.
In 2007 he prepares to take the biggest
risk of his career to date.
After a 2006 in which almost all the films that
came out from his Factory flopped miserably,
many people doubt his sanity. He is attempting
to remake Sholay; one of the most historic hits
of Bollywood.
The gamble he is taking is huge. First, casting
Amitabh Bacchhan in a role parallel to Gabbar
Singh, casting a relatively new and inexperienced
Nisha Kothari in the role made memorable by
Hema Malini. Casting a debutant to play the
character done by Amitabh in the original; the
list goes on. Ramgopal Verma doesn’t seem
to be concerned about any of this. He works
by his own convictions and takes all that it
brings, success or failure.
Many in the trade have already said that it
is ‘well nigh’ impossible to match
up to the original. Sachin Pilgaonkar, an actor
who had played a small role in the original
has said that a remake to Sholay was not going
to shake up the industry. It will come and go
as any other film. However he also said that
Ramgopal Verma was a man who would embark on
a suicide mission without giving a thought to
the consequences. Time will tell whether Ramgopal
Varma will stand through his toughest test yet.
