First week of 2007: unflattering; dismal
January
09, 2007
No
one took notice of the first Bollywood
release in 2007. No one seemed to
care. When the film is based on the
lives of four women who like to live
it up, the cast carrying no frontline
heroine and almost no publicity to
talk about, such a response is only
inevitable. Kudiyon Kaa Hai Zamaana
which opened across the country in
a handful of screens on the first
Friday of 2007 met with a cold shoulder,
the kind that has not been offered to many films
in 2006.
When we say ‘poor opening’, it is
assumed that there was around a 25-30% response
over the first weekend. But in this case ‘poor
opening’ meant an opening of less than
10%. Of course, this film was not expected to
create any ripples at the box office. But, the
presence of Rekha was considered the high point
of the film (if there is any). The Rekha factor
was expected to bail the producer out from any
serious trouble. But the audience is taking
none of it. If the word of mouth is anything
to go by, then the movie will be out of theatres
by the time it completes 10 days. Certainly
not the way Bollywood expected to begin 2007.
