The
audio release of KB’s forthcoming film Poi
was held yesterday. Unlike other filmi functions,
this one had a tinge of nostalgia and dignity with
a generous dose of banter. Produced by KB’s
protégé, Prakashraj, Poi is a delightful
love story from the veteran. We are sure that it
would have the KB touch. On to the vignettes from
the function. |

|
Prakashraj
played the perfect host conducting the proceedings
with sincere humility. Vaali started off by saying
that Prakashraj had offered the right Guru Dakshina
by giving his mentor an opportunity to direct
a film. Prakashraj was quick to rebut and said
that what he was today was because of KB. So,
there was no way he could offer Guru Dakshina
to the master and Poi was more like a family celebration.
KB rose to speak and there was overwhelming awe
at the man’s achievements. In his short
and sweet speech, he said that he felt nostalgic
on seeing the photographs from his films, which
lined the dais and it was a great feeling to be
working with a young cast and crew. He felt much
younger for his over forty years experience in
the industry. He also gave an interesting fact
that the film had originally been titled Ilamai
Poigal by him and he had changed it to Poi on
the advice of the film’s music director,
Vidyasagar. |
|
Prakashraj
said that he had asked Kamal and Rajini, two of
KB’s best known products in Tamil cinema,
to give their speech at the end so that the audience
would sit through the function. Kamal spoke about
his first meeting with KB behind the scenes of
the hit play, Major Chandrakanth. He said that
it was KB who spotted his full potential and showcased
it to the world. |
|
Rajini’s
speech was punctuated by humor and constant
applause from the audience. He said that
he felt very fortunate to have been chosen
by him as few would get such an opportunity.
He also congratulated Prakashraj for repaying
to their mentor what he himself could not.
While KB had stood by him during very difficult
times, he felt unable many times to do something
for him. Acting in KB’s films was
a professional commitment and he could nothing
more. Therefore, he thanked Prakashraj and
this was greeted by wide applause. He also
wished that KB should introduce more and
more fresh talent to enrich Tamil cinema.
Actors Nagesh, Sivakumar and Jayanthi also
spoke. Some of the memorable songs from
KB’s films were rendered by S.P.B.
Charan. |

Poi
is a love story told in a different manner. There
is no violence or villainy or big crowds. We are
raring to see the film, KB sir! |
