Maniratnam
has not made any announcement for new projects
since the setback in Aytha Ezuthu. He also suffered
some health problems. But the reclusive director
is back with a story based on the magnum opus,
Mahabaratha. Although the theme is familiar, with
several screen versions already available, one
can be sure that Mani would bring an element of
surprise and finesse to the treatment. Another
interesting scenario is that there are two more
directors who have planned a film based on the
epic to be made almost simultaneously. Noted Bengali
director Rituparno Ghosh, whose Raincoat, did
not enthuse mainstream Hindi audience and Rajkumar
Santoshi, who let us all down in Family have sought
Mahabaratha to redeem their reputation. This is
not however the first time that two or more Bollywood
directors have announced projects based on the
same theme. A couple of years ago, we had as much
as three versions of the biography of the great
martyr, Bhagat Singh. |
