Tamil
Nadu will go to the polls soon. Political mercury
is rising as the main opposition parties are bracing
up for the all important battle. Although formal
coalition announcements are yet to come, the leaders
have begun to huddle up with brainstorming sessions.
It is also the time when the parties try to woo
celebrities either for contesting or for campaigning.
Traditionally, film stars who are either out of
the spotlight or just fading out enter one or
the other party around this time. It works well
for both. The stars get their share of attention
and parties try to work up the crowds by showcasing
them. |
Interestingly,
there have been three incidents of film stars
testing political waters in Tamil Nadu. First,
it was Captain Vijayakanth, who launched his party
with an eye on the elections. Then came the dilly
dally approach by Karthik and now we have the
comedian Senthil. Senthil formally joined AIADMK
today. He met party boss and Chief Minister, Dr.
J. Jayalalithaa and sought her blessings.
He was a leading comedian in combination with
Koundamani. They ruled the scene until the arrival
of Vadivelu and Vivek. He has always remained
non-controversial and kept a low profile. He stayed
away from Kollywood until we had almost forgotten
him. We do not know the immediate motivation for
him to join politics. We would have to wait and
see whether the latest development is just a flash
in the pan or Amma has some aces up her sleeve!
We only hope that this unassuming actor who has
played the underdog in many films comes out trumps
in his new avatar. Would the curiosity aroused
by his presence be converted into votes? Only
time will tell. |
