Thank god it’s Friday
       - Smile ‘cos Hanuman’s back
By Harish V
December 28, 2007
After a few exceptional weeks, the box-office has finally slowed down and this week cineplexs’ will be welcoming just two movies. With the heavy flow of movies in the past two weeks and many old movies still holding up strong, the new movies will face stiff competition and as the two are going to show only in a few

theatres with even fewer shows per day, the box office will probably remain the same from what it was last weekend.

Last week’s Welcome and Taare Zameen Par have got a grand reception all over the nation. With Welcome already being declared a major hit and Taare Zameen Par showing amazing legs with each passing day, it is sure to reach the hit status by this weekend. So Bollywood is in cloud nine, as a fabulous year is also ending on a spectacular note due to these two big movies. And the Hindi audience will be hoping that this week’s new release will also bring more smiles to their already beaming faces.

Now let’s get on to this week’s analysis of the weekend new movies,

Grudge 2

Grudge 2 a follow up of the 2004 super hit horror movie, which scared itself to box-office glory the world over. The film is a remake of a Japanese horror movie Ju-on, but all sequels don’t work, and incidentally, the same director Takashi Shimizu has directed Grudge 2. The movie grossed just $40 million in the US market, but its predecessor collected more than thrice that amount in the US alone. Grudge 2 was a 2006 Halloween release in the US. So it has taken a year to release in India and so many fans of the original would have probably caught up with the horror sequel in the DVDs. But youngsters, who are off for a date will probably enjoy this ghost movie. Others are recommended to stay away from this sequel that is not even half as good as its predecessor, which is not much to say as even its predecessor was just about ok.

Why you should? – Because you want to go to an exciting date.

Why you shouldn’t? – Because you want to see a good horror movie

Now for this weeks pick of the week.

Behindwoods.com Pick of the week – Hanuman Returns

The highly anticipated sequel to the super-hit 2D animated epic, Hanuman, is to be released today. The movie will surely be a welcome change amidst all the predictable Indian animated movies. The story takes place in the present India where a gifted boy, called Maruthi, slowly discovers that he has supernatural powers and is in fact the monkey God, Hanuman’s incarnation.

The story looks very fresh and its sounds like a perfect Grandpa’s tale. I mean, when we were kids, we used to run to our Grandfather whom we loved so much, because he used to tell these fantasy-filled stories about space ships, robots and the big fat boy with a huge appetite. People who relate to this will surely be able to relate to the movie, which is a fresh change from the usual Ramayan and Mahabaratha stories.

What makes Hanuman even special is that the gifted director, Anurag Kashyap of Black Friday fame, has directed it. This can quite be the first Indian animated movie to be directed by a famous director. The movie is sure to become a darling of the children and with the winter vacations on, the prospects of this movie looks good. Expect the movie to become a hit and we can anticipate another sequel, which will make it one of the most successful franchisee after the Koi Mil Gaya franchise.

Why you should? – Because you want to know how Anurag Kashyap has impressed with a children’s movie.

Why you shouldn’t? – You are already put off by the director’s last work, No smoking, and don’t want to take any chances.
