We began
by asking Ameer about what made him take
up acting and pat came the reply that it
was this very question that made him reconsider
his earlier decision against acting. He
felt the need to do so as he was asked in
almost every interview about his views on
directors taking to acting as though it
was taboo. He went on to reiterate that
this movie is about the lives of people
living in slums and isn’t about a
larger than life personality.
We pushed the paper a little by asking
him if he has bid good-bye to direction
to which Ameer replied that he has a script
in mind for a movie titled Kannabiran. This
film was to have hit the floors soon after
Paruthiveeran made it to the screens but
finding the right cast played spoilsport,
in addition to the 9-month time frame required
to finish the screenplay. He took this time
off to accept the acting offer as he could
use it for developing his screenplay and
insisted that direction is his domain and
that he would start work on Kannabiran as
soon as he had the screenplay completed.
As for the casting for the film, he said
he would announce it as soon as the script
is ready. On whether he would accept acting
offers in future if they came his way, Ameer
said that he would consider them on an ad
hoc basis. Now that’s a director speaking!
