Cinema
is a very powerful medium in terms
of the effect it has on the viewers
especially the younger and the more
impressionable age group. This has
been reiterated once again with the
murder of Arvind an eleven year old
school boy at Saligramam.
Arvind who had gone out of his house
to play had not returned home and
a few hours later was found dead in
a nearby bush.
This
has really shaken the residents of Chennai especially
parents with children in the particular age group.
In fact this case appeared very challenging for
Chennai police also. But the case has been solved
very swiftly with the murderers having been brought
to the book.
Commissioner
of Police Ms Letika Saran reveals that Arvind
has been murdered by his own play mates
for rupees five lakh ransom money for a
gala new-year bash. When the accused were
questioned they revealed that they got this
idea for such a heinous crime from films.
To sideline and divert the police dog from
zeroing on them, they had sprayed chilli
powder which they had witnessed in the film
‘Gilli’. Readers may also recall
that few years back, a housewife in Anna
Nagar was killed by her former driver who
upon nabbing revealed that he had sprayed
chilli powder so that the police may not
find out the actual killer. He also told
that he had got this idea from the film
Gilli.
The
modus operandi of the above two murders reveals
a very shocking connection to the film world.
Vulnerable people tend to take examples from the
film and that too for a very wrong reason. In
the murder of Arvind, the three accused in the
age group of 15-18 have confessed that they got
this idea from watching a lot of movies. Means
don’t seem to matter anymore for the younger
generation. Their lust for money and a craze for
a lavish life style have driven them to such a
deplorable act. Film world on the whole should
be more responsible while trying to make a film
as they have a very high social responsibility
towards the society because here films are a religion
by itself and the actors are the presiding deities.
