The
much anticipated and highly hyped
remake of one of the biggest hits
in the history of Indian cinema finally
has something to show. The first rushes
of Ramgopal Varma Ki Sholay have been
released. Well, there is not much
that one can judge from the glimpses
that have been given, but it sure
does set the tone for all that lies
in store.
Ramgopal
Varma and his production house (The Factory) had
already created ripples by announcing the remake
of the cult classic of Indian cinema early in
2006. But the biggest shocker was the announcement
that Amitabh Bacchan; the protagonist in the original,
would be playing the character of a notorious
gangster on the lines of Gabbar Singh in the original.
This must be one of the most dramatic reversal
of roles in a remake that Indian cinema (maybe
World cinema) has ever seen.
The rest of the cast includes Ajay Devgan and
a newcomer. It takes a person like Ramgopal Varma
to cast a relatively unknown face in a film that
is sure to attract lot of public response. The
movie also has Nisha Kothari supposedly enacting
the role of Basanti from the original, but there
have been reports denying similarities between
Basanti and Nisha’s character.
Malayalam superstar Mohanlal plays an important
role, the one enacted by Sanjeev Kumar in the
original. The latest news is that the first two
schedules of the movie have been completed, but
there are no official reports stating the tentative
release date. RGV’s Factory also has a number
of other films in the pipeline including Nishabd;
the Amitabh starrer.
The release of the rushes of the movie has attracted
huge amount of media attention. One can only imagine
the sort of excitement that the release of the
movie would create. Eagerly awaiting the ‘King
of all Remakes’.
