It
was during one of the numerous press
conferences that are being held around
the country to promote KBC-SRK that
this happened. This might look a bit
trivial to those who are used to having
a lit cigarette perched on their lips
more often than not. But for those
of you who think that smoking in public
is rude or even criminal and for those
of you have heard that there is a
new law in India that forbids actors
from smoking on screen ( big or small),
this might make sense.
Shahrukh
Khan was at ease with himself, handling questions
shot at him by journalists with élan. Beside
him was the brain behind KBC, Siddhartha Basu.
Everything was going on just as planned; TV cameras
were rolling, capturing every move of the star.
Then suddenly, as if out of sheer habit SRK fished
out a cigarette from his pocket lit it and took
a puff. One is not sure whether the cameraman
was taken aback by what was happening or delighted
to be shooting a scoop which had lot of scope
for controversy. But after two puffs of his cigarette,
SRK suddenly woke up, or someone nudged him. He
realized immediately what he had done.
The cigarette went to the ground in a jiffy. Just
when thought that SRK would squirm in his seat,
he gave us a glimpse of the world of experience
that he has behind him. He handled the situation
in the best way possible; he just owned up. He
said ‘sorry’, looked at the cameraman
and told him “I know you cannot show that
on TV, sorry, censor that”. He had made
all the right moves and the best part of all this
is that he had not lost his poise even for a moment.
One cannot help but notice the similarities in
the lives of SRK and Amitabh Bacchhan. Earlier
this year came the remake of Don, then came the
news that SRK is taking over as host of KBC and
just when the news of the Big B’s troubles
due to a hoarding showing him smoking a cigar
has died down comes SRK with his version of the
smoking controversy.
The TV channel had to reluctantly censor those
frames in which SRK had puffed away. But they
were smart enough to show just the one frame where
the fumes of the cigarette were all around SRK’s
face.
