As
the GIFA awards ceremony drew to a
close on the night of Dec09 almost
every big name had some award to show.
A person who has not followed Bollywood
business over the last year can be
forgiven for thinking that the entire
show was stage managed to keep all
the stars happy so that they return
next year. The truth is that almost
everyone has tasted success in 2006.
It
is not for nothing that 2006 is being hailed as
the year of the blockbuster in Bollywood. A quick
look at the list of winners in the major categories
will give a clearer picture.
Best Movie:
This one went to Lagey Raho Munna Bhai. After
the award for best story had been grabbed by Vidhu
Vinodh Chopra and Rajkumar Hirani earlier in the
evening, this came as no surprise. A testimony
to the fact that one does not need the presence
of any ‘Khan’ in a movie to get an
award.
Best Screenplay:
Rang De Basanti. This one did surprise a few people,
especially because Best story had gone to Lagey
Raho Munna Bhai. But the lump that RDB’s
climax had left in everyone’s throats may
have been the factor that clinched the prize in
its favour. The award was shared by Renzil D’souza
and Rakesh Omprakash Mehra.
Best
Director:
Another award to Rang De Basanti. Rakesh
Omprakash Mehra being awarded for the skilful
amalgamation of Bhangra, Rock and patriotism.
Best Music Director:
After more than three years of absence from
the awards list, arguably the best music
director in India received a double delight.
First was the award for the best background
score. Just when things had calmed down
came the next award; for the best music
of the year. Both awards were for the chartbusting
album of Rang De Basanti.
Best
Actor:
This one went to the man who has had his best
year in Bollywood thus far. Two blockbusters back
to back and he is the current numero uno. For
his tremendous performance in Krisshh, Hrithik
Roshan. Whether his scene stealing show in Dhoom
2 was considered is not known.
Best Actress:
Receiving, perhaps what is her first major recognition
was Bipasha Basu. It might be safe to say that
there was not much competition after the lady’s
excellent showing in Corporate. There were just
a handful of films this year with scope for leading
ladies to perform.
Best Supporting Actor:
It’s been a long time since he started playing
the lead, but he seems to be getting more awards
for supporting roles than for the leading. After
Yuva in 2004, Abhishek Bacchhan got his second
supporting actor award. This time it was for his
portrayal of the loyal but frustrated husband
in Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna.
Best
Supporting Actress:
This must have been the biggest surprise
of the evening. This lady is hardly finding
her footing in the industry. But she has
managed to outrun other experienced hands
to win this award. Soha Ali Khan for playing
the widow of Madhavan in Rang De Basanti.
Looks like brother Saif’s good luck
is rubbing off on her too.
Best Actor in a villainous role:
Guess who. Saif Ali Khan for his role in
Omkaara. This man, after nearly 10 years
in the shadows of the other three Khans
is coming into his element. His performance
in Omkaara made people wonder whether this
was the same man who had done movies like
HumTum and Kal Ho Na Ho.
Best
actor in a comic role:
New kid on the block. Tusshhar Kapoor for his
role in Golmaal-Funlimited. Not an easy one to
get; he had to get past seasoned hands like Anupam
Kher for this one.
Most searched actor on the internet:
In simple words, a popularity award. Who else?
Shahrukh Khan….. He is the Baadshah.
Most searched actress on the internet:
Surprise! Priyanka Chopra. Not Aishwarya Rai.
Unexpected, but true.
The only real big name to miss out was the Big
B. But he doesn’t need awards to prove his
worth, does he.
