And coming to this week’s releases we
have two thrillers, two horrors, two actions,
one romance and one drama. Yes, as much as eight
films are to hit the screens this Friday but my
work is not that tough as only two films are actually
competing. Ok, the other six first.
First in the line is an English movie Marine,
starred by a WWE champion John Cena. It is almost
like an Arnold action movie. Just go in and hear
the bang bang, don’t think of logic and
enjoy the action-packed movie. If you are up for
it then go ahead, but a small warning - this movie
has as much as 15 explosions. And there are chances
that you will end up having a headache.
The second one is a Tamil romantic movie called
Urchagam starring Nandha and Sherin in the lead
roles. It has good music from Ranjith Barot, and
is directed by Ravichandran. The popular music
can really give it a boost but the early reviews
aren’t satisfactory.
Next in the menu is a horror movie, Wes Craven’s
Cursed. Though Wes Craven is considered the father
of gore movies you can give this a slip. Still
if you want to see excess of blood and long for
some B grade fun then this is the one for you.
And most of the prints are targeting the Tamil
audience because only one is featuring the movie
in English and the rest just the dubbed version.
The movie released in the US some two and half
years ago turned out to be damp squib.
The next film has a big star cast. It’s
The Invasion - a Science fiction-thriller with
Nicole Kidman and Daniel Craig. The story is all
about alien invasion and the earthlings’
crusade to stop them from spreading an epidemic
to make all human beings possessed. The movie
is based on a novel which was already made into
a movie in 1956. The earlier version was termed
a classic, but not this one! The star value and
the fact that the movie is being released only
a week or two after its US premiere gives a slight
edge.
The fifth movie is another remake titled Victoria
no. 203. It is about diamonds, love and thieves.
This flick is an action comedy starring Anupam
Kher, Om Puri, Jimmy Shergill, and Javed Jafferi
and host of other talents.
Next is again a Thriller “Vacancy”
it is scary and has enough thrills to make you
move to the edge of your seats. It’s not
the quality of the movie which makes you do this
but the acting by Kate Backinsale and Luke Wilson.
Its decision time and I have decided after hours
of thinking, the next in line is Ram Gopal Verma’s
Sholay, sorry, Ram Gopal Verma ki Aag. The movie
is getting ready for a release amongst loads of
controversy. Whether Aag will get garland of thorns
or garland of flowers, only time can tell. Still
the very fact of Amitabh doing the villain role
is enough glamour for people to sway into the
theatres.
And now the pick of the week time
Behindwoods Pick of the Week –
Ammuvaaghiya Naan
This movie with Bharathi as Ammu, the sex-worker
and Parthiban as a writer has come out beautifully.
The movie directed by a debutant Padmarajan is
getting accolades for its bold and daring theme.
The director has made sure that the movie doesn’t
slump into melodrama.
The movie is all about how a sex-worker becomes
a housewife and the problems she faces. Ammuvaaghiya
Naan has good music and there is perfectionism
in almost every department which shows that the
movie is a work of art from a master artist. Let
us hope the Tamil audiences accept such attempts
as these films are sure to lift the quality of
Tamil cinema to newer heights.
Verdict – Up to you to
decide - Ammu or Aag
