Tamil Cinema's Dry Day
By Behindwoods News Bureau.
August 15, 2007
While India celebrates the 60th Indian Independence Day, as it seems, Tamil cinema would rather prefer to lie low. Much to the surprise of movie buffs, Independence Day seems to be fading into oblivion from the good books of producers and directors from the status of ‘auspicious day’ for new releases. This year around, no Tamil movies are being released on August 15, 2007 as opposed to any other year.

Earlier, August 15th used to be one of the prominent days in line with any other festivals ranging from Pongal, Tamil New Year, and Diwali to Christmas. There were a few producers in good old days, like Balaji whose company co-produced the recently released Kreedom, who had it a mandate to invariably release a movie on August 15.

History has witnessed a few good blockbusters released on the Independence Day. For instance, Roja that went on to create box office history and international acclaim bestowed an immense talent by name A.R. Rahman to Tamil cinema. What Rahman did to the music scene of Indian cinema needs no elucidation.

For reasons unknown, this trend is slowly ceasing to exist – releasing movies on the Independence Day. Could be that movie making as a profession is on a decline. Or just that this year the movies that are being produced are not ready for release yet.

Bheema Bheema was a possible Independence Day release since the movie was under production for a long time and there were rumors that it will hit the theatres in the near future. However, Lingusamy seems to have decided to treat Vikram fans only with the movie’s music for the Independence Day. Bheema’s music was released recently. Lack of Tamil movies could prove fruitful for the Hindi and English movies hitting the multiplexes in Chennai on the Independence Day.

The fact remains that the Independence Day on August 15 2007 will be short of the required cinematic luster and fans would have to satisfy with movies released earlier this month or the month before.
Movies such as Sivaji and Kreedom are still riding high at the box office. It is expected that they will further cash in on the Independence Day holiday.
