KANK,
the ‘BIG’ Karan Johar movie
opened ‘BIG’ in all cities.
But it has not been able to sustain the
initial momentum. The public opinion is
not too positive and it seems as if Karan
Johar’s spotless record may just be
spoilt here. This is not to say that the
movie is going to be a loss-making proposition,
far from that. |

|
The
bumper opening has guaranteed returns
for the movie. But will the movie
be one that stays in the minds of
people long after it leaves theatres,
unlikely.
The reason that industry experts seem
to be giving is that the theme of
the movie is too outlandish (if that
word can be used) at least to the
conservative (at least from the exterior)
Indian population. The theme is not
finding acceptance, especially among
family audience and happily married
couples. After all, extra marital
relationships are still taboo in India. |
|
|
But
that’s only in India, what about
elsewhere. Take for instance New York
where this theme would seem far more realistic
than far fetched. The movie is simply
being loved in that part of the world.
The fact that the movie was shot there
also adds to its appeal. It is reportedly
on its way to breaking all records set
by previous Hindi movies, Kabhi khushi
kabhi gham and Rang de Basanti, and that
too by a long way. Theater reports are
suggesting a huge net gain for the movie.
Looks like Karan Johar not only made the
movie in New York, but also for New York.
