This seems to be a season of remakes —
be it songs or movies. Of many of the yesteryear
movies that are in the remaking kiln, Naan
Avan Illai was the first to hit the silver
screens. This movie was well received among
the movie buffs with the cash register ticking
away to glory.

Probably this prompted Balachander to remake his famous
Manmadha Leelai, in which Kamal played a negative character.
Kalaipuli S Dhanu will be the producer. But who would
be suitable to take up Kamal's unmatched performance in
the original? After heavy discussions, Jeeva was zeroed
in. His performance in Ram and not-so-image-conscious
attitude was the deciding factor.
When approached, Jeeva reportedly asked for some time
to decide. On seeing the original version, Jeeva is said
to have developed cold feet as he was doubtful whether
the role would suit him. Moreover, he feels that for someone
like him who is trying to establish himself in the industry,
the negative shades of the role immortalized by Kamal,
might be fatal to his career at this point of time. Having
weighed all this, the young lad had mustered enough courage
to say no to the kings of directors.
