Two aspects about Mani
Ratnam that the outside world doesn’t know that
you’d like to share with b’woods readers
One thing that immediately comes to my mind is his
punctuality and his dedication. Once he is into a
project he would be completely occupied with it 24/7
and would think of nothing else.
•
Cinema is primarily a director’s
medium but is perceived here as an actor’s medium.
Please opine and do you see any change coming?
True, but I think the story is ultimately the hero
of the film, however, people
do continue to remain star struck, but I do see a
change coming and even stars have begun to experiment.

Cinema was in for a revolution
in the seventies and it took a slide in the eighties and there
has been a lull ever since except for a few sparks here and
there. Today’s movies are less real, could that be the
reason?
How can you say that? There have been good movies hitting
the screens quiet frequently. Movies such as Veyil and Paruthi
Veeran are good examples and even today our best 10 films
would be of international standards. |

Your wishes to upcoming
direction aspirants
Hard work is the only way out, and dedication. Patience
is a virtue and be prepared to start as the last assistant
and move up slowly.
•
What do you look for in
an assistant director? Film schools vs field experience.
Which is better? Govind Nihlani said 3 years at a
film school is better than 10 years as an assistant.
Comment.
Punctuality,
I somehow am a stickler for punctuality, guess it
stuck on from Mani sir. As for selecting one, I go
by instinct.

Your next project, is it ready?
I do have a couple of scripts in mind but haven’t yet
zeroed in on one and am in talks with a few producers as well.

Your wishes to B’woods readers.
I would like to wish all Behindwoods viewers a Happy and safe
Deepavali. Please go and watch Kannaamoochi enadaa in theatres
and not on pirated DVDs. We have worked really hard for this
movie; hence please don’t watch it on pirated DVDs.
