Failure of the 11th Avatharam
June 17, 2008

After generating enough curiosity and inflating my expectation balloon quite high, which is natural since this legend has mesmerized us with dual/multiple roles in past films like MMKR and Indian, this movie felt deflated and bust. It is nowhere near the league of Nayagan or Indian. It is needless to say that Kamal - the actor, like always, gave his very best - but unfortunately none of the roles here will go into Kamal's top 10 performances. The primary reason is because Kamal - the story and screenplay

Kamal Haasan
Writer- failed. His overall effort is still very commendable and the movie is worth a watch primarily for the effort.

I came out of the theatre disappointed for several reasons, some of which are mentioned below.
Kamal Haasan
Biggest disappointment was the confusing and incoherent story line. What starts of interestingly with something about a certain Chaos theory really gets lost after that. When you hear the title Dasavatharam, you tend to expect some relation between the 10 characters –nothing of that sort happens here and it just turns out that Kamal has done 9 other roles which could have been done by other regular support artists.

Make-up was not really up to the mark. Baring a couple of roles most others had a glossy plastic look. Many of the roles' make-up quality were only as much artificial as the ones in Citizen. Balram Naidu was the least plastic and among the better ones.

Poor graphics in many scenes. Water graphics in 12th century was too artificial. The tsunami effect was below average. The coloring of the butterfly was not natural and did not blend in with the scene. In short you’ll wonder why they spent so much on the graphics.

Lack of repeat value - lack of exciting songs. There isn't anything

compelling in the movie to pull you back into the theatre for another viewing. (Except for maybe trying to understand the story better or maybe for Balram's interrogation scene). For such a big budget movie I think it is a significant problem. The songs are very average and you shouldn't be surprised if you do not see it often on cable TV.

In short, this could have been a medium budget movie.
