Helmet - A new threat to Tamil cinema?
February 25, 2007
Partha Mudhal Naale
Vijay
Remember the famous song from Alaipayuthey where Madhavan glides stylishly on a bike, the song from Run where he races on his bike with Meera Jasmine in the pillion, the racy stunt scenes from Adhi where Vijay performs some aerobics to thrash down the villains or the latest romantic bike ride of Kamal with Kamilini Mukherjee in Paratha Mudhal naale song from Vettaiyadu Vilayadu – all without helmet off course. With the Tamil Nadu government’s decision to impose helmet wearing on two wheeler riders; those scenes might as well cease to exist in Tamil cinema.

Now, imagine the same bike scenes of heroes with their helmets on. Less electrifying, agree? But rules are rules, says the government.

Earlier, to prevent youngsters in the society from taking their dream heroes seriously in smoking scenes, a ban was imposed across Indian cinema to those scenes. Though this helmet move is not aimed at the glamour world, one can only imagine that it could prevent the helmetless bike rides on screen as well
Since the move could not be openly protested – as it was aimed genuinely at the safety of two wheeler riders – Kollywood has started to speak about the rule in hushed whispers. Which is obviously a mark of disapproval. While the entire public is prevented from joyrides without a helmet, will the heroes be just allowed to stretch the rules?
Some upcoming ventures

Some of the significant stills released from the upcoming Ajith venture Kreedom shows a candid picture of Ajith riding in the bike with his father – without helmet again. While this scene has been lauded by fans and public, will it just be lucky enough to get into the movie? That remains to be seen.

What does the future have in hold?

Kollywood might just get along with the rule or it could just abandon those scenes forever from Tamil cinema. However, will the censor really ban such scenes keeping the rule in mind? That is something to look forward to though
